Not a single composition as such, the Grande Messe des Morts, is a skilfully compiled collection of works by Charpentier for the Offices of the Dead. William Christie and his Les Arts Florissants performed the work on the 300th anniversary of the composer's death in 2004 and the recording is taken from this event. Charpentier speaks to us across the centuries in music that is both touching and noble. To leaven the air of solemnity Christie has added the jubilant Te Deum which has been given fresh new airs and graces here.
