Samuel Barber: Adagio for Strings; Violin Concerto; Knoxville: Summer 1915
London Symphony Orchestra; Tilson Thomas - Hendricks; London Symphony Orchestra; Tilson Thomas - Oliveira; Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra; Slatkin - Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra; Slatkin
Samuel Barber (1910-1981) is best-known today for his Adagio for Strings, which was originally written as the slow movement for an early string quartet, yet has become one a popular piece in its own right. The Adagio was first performed in its orchestral form by Toscanini, with the Essay for Orchestra in the same concert. These works are typical of Barber's output, being overtly European in outlook and language.

Medea''s Meditation and Dance of Vengeance (from "Medea"), Op. 23a
"he woodwind soloists of the London Symphony Orchestra tangle in the heat-haze of Copland's string writing in 'Nature, the gentlest mother', and Hendricks's soprano competes feistily with her orchestral counterparts in the gusty 'There came a wind like a bugle'"
BBC Music Magazine
"Knoxville...is one of the most magically evocative pieces of its kind, and it is the more magical here for the authentically American inflexions that Hendricks gives it, together with glowing string-tone."
