If there is one composer whose music best evokes the American landscape it is that of Aaron Copland (1900-1990). Much of his music shows the influence of jazz, as seen in the Music for Theatre, Quiet City and the Clarinet Concerto (written for Benny Goodman), and the American folk style (Appalachian Spring and the opera The Tender Land). The Dance Panels is a work from Copland's maturity and was his last dance work. It was commissioned by Jerome Robbins as 'a ballet without a story' and was later, without any alteration, turned into this concert piece.
