The Penguin Guide

"Historic performances of two great English works by one of the greatest violinists, the Elgar recorded in 1949, Walton in 1941. Heifetz commissioned the Walton and gave its first performance in 1939. This later performance is valuable because it is of the original score before Walton revised the orchestration. Heifetz's treatment of virtuoso passages is non-chalant in its ease, but just as impressive is the poetic phrasing of the lyrical themes."
