"For me, a successful performance of the Seventh must positively wallow in the finale. If it is underplayed or rationalized, it sounds merely pompous. If played with panache, it is gloriously over-the-top. Gielen's finale comes thundering in, and the radiant fanfares are likewise forthright. The series of ritornellos is never rushed (as it is in many readings, so as not to prolong the embarrassment), and Gielen exploits every variation to the fullest, reveling in either kitsch or joyous exaltation—take your pick." (Fanfare)
