Bach: The Art of the Fugue, BWV1080

Bach: Art of the Fugue No1-14

Behringer; Hill

"Hill's bright, Italian harpsichord is recorded very closely, but it has a pleasing sound, and Hill plays with the dexterity, firmness of tempo, and sometimes graceful phrasing that the piece demands." (Fanfare)

"Hill's technical assurance and musicianly phrasing are much to be admired, and his textures are always clean. Both he and Behringer employ copies of a late seventeenth-century Italian instrument, on the grounds that Bach's harpsichord writing (as distinct from that for organ) was mainly influenced by Frescobaldi."
Gramophone

"Hill contrasts the meditative archaic movements with the Italianate verve of Bach’s contemporary style, notably in the dazzling mirror fugues (three lines which prove to create invertible counterpoint even when they themselves are turned upside-down – what a mind!). When Behringer joins Hill for the duet version, they play faster, egging each other on with contagious excitement."
