Pilgrimage to Santiago

Pilgrimage to Santiago

Monteverdi Choir; Gardiner - Thomas; Monteverdi Choir; Gardiner

In 2004, its fortieth anniversary year, the Monteverdi Choir under the direction of Sir John Eliot Gardiner undertook a pilgrimage in song through France and Northern Spain to Santiago de Compostela, performing in the great abbeys and cathedrals along the way. The choir’s pilgrimage programmes focussed on the sacred polyphony of the Iberian peninsula during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, these works being set in a broader European context through the inclusion of pieces by composers who worked outside Spain and Portugal, but whose music was probably known there. This recording, the second of two made on the choir’s return to London, offers a chance to share their experience of living inside the music along El camino de Santiago.

"The ever-enterprising Monteverdi Choir under John Eliot Gardiner undertook a marvellous project, brought to fruition in 2004. They made the pilgrimage to Santiago in northern Spain, giving highly successful concerts on the way. This recording, made on their return to England, allows listeners to enjoy to the full the fruits of their labours: the sharing of the whole experience and the music they were able to explore so deeply together during the pilgrimage had provided them with a unique opportunity to produce a result of inestimable value. I am not exaggerating - to my mind this is a CD of the highest quality...The singing is exceptionally beautiful, with admirable choices of tempo, and especially the frequent use of a well sustained slow tactus and a judicious variety of dynamics. The choir's flexibility in the hands of their conductor is exemplary. To give a single typical example, take O Maria, vernans rosa by Clemens Non Papa. It is superbly sustained, a performance of intense and mature contemplation, with carefully balanced dynamics, strength and vigour. Highly recommended."
