Jonas Kaufmann Sings German Arias

Jonas Kaufmann Sings German Arias

Kaufmann; Mahler Chamber Orchestra; Abbado

Jonas Kaufmann has already performed many of these roles on the world's great opera stages. This album consists of outstanding arias from German opera; music of his homeland, which he grew up hearing. Items include selections from the great operas of Wagner, Beethoven's only opera, Fidelio, favorite arias by Mozart and rarely heard opera arias from Schubert. The great opera conductor Claudio Abbado directs the Mahler Chamber Orchestra.

"For all his much-admired forays into Italian and French repertoire, the newest star tenor is on home ground here. But, ever versatile, German arias for Kaufmann means Mozart as well as Wagner. Vocally more at home now in the latter than the former, these are all immensely skilful, nuanced performances. Kaufmann reminds us once again that he is an artist as much as a crowd-pleaser."
Gramophone

"[Kaufmann's] second solo album for Decca is of German operatic operas and is conducted by Claudio Abbado. This is not only Abbado’s first vocal recording for Decca, but also his first Decca recording for over 40 years, and Kaufman has certainly made it worth his while."
bbc.co.uk

"It's not every tenor who can persuade Claudio Abbado to conduct his recital disc, but then Jonas Kaufmann is no ordinary tenor. His stunningly musical, rounded voice is heard to advantage on this well-planned disc, which surely aims to demonstrate the continuity of the Austro-German tradition from Mozart to Wagner."
