"...his rhetorical and expansive statement of the cadenzalike flourish at the beginning of the Emperor augurs for a performance that will be more pompous than regal. But it turns out differently, Arrau producing what, to my mind, is his finest Beethoven concerto recording: taut, grand, virtuosic, and (yes) forward-pressing, with a beautifully sustained, but never distended, slow movement."
