In the film Amadeus, there is a wonderful scene where Salieri first encounters the music of Mozart and is overcome by its exceptional beauty. The piece he hears is Mozart's serenade for 13 wind instruments in B flat, also known as the 'Gran Partita'. Conceived as a large scale work in five movements, Mozart manages to combine all the disparate instruments quite miraculously and the sublime slow movement and vigourous minuets are a joy. While on a smaller scale the other wind serenades share with the 'Gran Partita' Mozart's unerring gift for melody and form. Jack Brymer's pedigree as a consummate Mozartian is unquestioned and he elicits playing of real panache from the London Wind Concert.
