This remarkable work - even more so when one continues it is the work of a man barely 30 - is imbued with an extraordinary spiritual intensity. It is most certainly not a fire-and-brimstone Requiem; rather, it is a work for those who mourn; "As one whom his mother comforteth, so I will comfort you", sings the soprano in a soaring hymn of grief-assuaging beauty. It has not always been lucky on record; all too often it is allowed to descend into stodginess. Gardiner, however, opts for a reading of rare subtlety and the result is a triumph.
Outstanding performance.
"Gardiner's 'revolutionary' account of the German Requiem brings a range of choral sound even more thrilling than in the concert hall...One could not ask for a more complete renovation of a masterpiece often made to sound stodgy and square.
"Combines freshness with a genuine depth ... horns are especially lovely, and the choral singing is incisive, powerful and expressive. Rodney Gilfry sings with a voice that seems bathed in liquid gold
