Beethoven: The 5 Piano Concertos

Beethoven: The 5 Piano Concertos

Brendel; Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra; Rattle

Beethoven's five piano concertos, written between 1795 and 1809, unleashed the true potential of the piano. Previously, the formula for 18th-century composers was to work with a series of delicate exchanges between soloist and orchestra. Beethoven challenged this approach, and was bold enough to not only harness the harmonic beauty of his predecessors, but also to set a new direction by drawing the piano into dramatic conflict with the orchestra. In doing so, Beethoven set a new benchmark for piano and orchestral composition. Rarely do we get a chance today to enjoy the spoils of such masterpieces being played by the fusion of such musical finesse as Brendel, Rattle and the Vienna Philharmonic. This is breathtakingly stunning music.

"...the results have an extra spontaneity...the dynamic range is greater too, with hushed pianissimos more intense, and with Rattle encouraging lightness in his accompaniments. ...a fine achievement."
The Penguin Guide

"The frisson created between Brendel's articulate pianism, Rattle's dynamic conducting and the Vienna Philharmonic's team-spirited playing, makes for one of the finest - and best-recorded - Beethoven concerto cycles to appear this side of the digital divide."
The Independent

"One of the most satisfying of all sets of these much recorded works. By any standards, a top recommendation."
The Sunday Times

"These recordings of the Beethoven piano concertos are sophisticated, discerning and tasteful...a set to treasure"
The Times
