The British Music Collection: Gerald Finzi

Finzi: Dies Natalis Op8; Let Us Garlands Bring Op18/1-5

Crabtree; Sweeney; Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra; Hill - Langridge; London Symphony Orchestra; Hickox - New College Choir, Oxford; Higginbottom - City of London Sinfonia; Hickox - Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields; Marriner - Luxon; Willison - Terfel; Martineau

An ideal introduction to the music of one of England's finest composers. It is for his settings of the English language that Gerald Finzi (1902-1956) is most highly regarded. His apparent bookishness as a young man found its expression in a series of masterly, and wholly original works for voice, including the wonderful song cycles Earth and Air and Rain, and Let Us Garlands Bring. Some of his finest choral works are also represented here, among them his masterpiece, Dies Natalis, based on texts by the English metaphysical poet Thomas Traherne. It is a work that also reflects Finzi's unique musical style, one which, although owing something to the traditions of Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Walton and Parry; also had a distinctly personal voice.

This splendid collection also includes the elegaic Romance for String Orchestra, a hauntingly beautiful piece guaranteed to appeal to anyone with a love for the string music of Elgar and Vaughan Williams.

"Dies Natalis is one of Finzi's most sensitive and deeply felt works. The performances here are both strong and convincing in their contrasing moods."
The Penguin Guide

"Marriner's account of the eloquent Romance for Strings is second to none, and Hickox's performance of Dies natalis brings a notably sensitive and passionate soloist in Philip Langridge. All in all this is a thoroughly worthwhile compilation, given excellent recording throughout."
