Clara Haskil's valuable 1950s recordings for Philips include the classic set of the complete Mozart Violin Sonatas with Arthur Grumiaux which still, despite their age, remain benchmark performances for these works. The same could be said for a number of these performances preserved here in crystalline remastered sound. The Scarlatti recordings might sound anachronistic in this age of period aware performance, but like the Horowitz recordings they are imbued with a warmth of feeling which is quite disarming. Her performances of the Mozart piano concertos are the very embodiment of style and self-effacement, similar qualities which pass over into Haskil's Beethoven, with the added requisite of a dash of drama thrown in. A marvellous set of refined, elegantly sculptured piano music.
