Johann Pachelbel was born in Nuremberg in 1653, receiving his musical education there. In the early 1670s he had relocated to Vienna which, as ever, was a major centre for music in Central Europe and beyond. Having learnt all that Vienna could teach him, Pachelbel moved onto a serious of successful positions throughout Germany as music director and organist before finally returning to Nuremberg in 1695 where he subsequently died in 1706.
Pachelbel's vast quantity of chamber, keyboard and church music had a lasting influence on the Baroque composers that followed him however he received a new wave of popularity in the twentieth century with the newly-discovered Canon and Gigue in D major which has now become one of the most frequently recorded and pieces in Baroque music crossing over into into the popular culture arena as well (cf. Oasis's 'Don't Look Back In Anger').
