Sir Neville Marriner (b. 1924) is one of the UK's most distinguished conductors. He studied at the Royal College of Music and the Paris Conservatoire before working in a couple of string quartets and then progressing to conducting. In 1959 Marriner formed the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, the orchestra for which he is most closely identified. Marriner and the ASMF became an irresistible force in the classical music industry and a byward for quality musicanshio.
Apart from the Academy Marriner has also held key posts with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra and the South German Radio Symphony Orchestra. Recognition for his contribution to music has come in the form of two British honours - an OBE in 1979 and a knighthood in 1985, as well as the French Ordre des Arts et Lettres in 1995. Marriner has recorded with EMI Classics, Philips and Hannsler Classics.
