Instrument - Double Bass

The double bass is the largest member of the string family in the orchestra. Its name derives from its ability to play a double octave lower than the cello, the next instrument up in pitch scale. The double bass can be played either by a bow or by plucking the strings (pizzicato). In its orchestral setting the double bass is used as the harmonic foundation for the rest of the instrumental forces. It is not a regular member of chamber groups, composers preferring the lighter sound of the cello. Schubert’s Trout Quintet is one of the important instances in which the double bass is used. The repertoire for solo double bass is a limited one, although depending on the abilities of the bassist a wider range of notes can be played than is usual. This allows performances of repertoire not normally associated with the instrument, such as Bach’s Solo Cello Suites. Concertos for double bass have also been written.
