Instrument - Harp

The harp is a very ancient stringed instrument and a relative to the lyre. Unlike the vast majority of string instruments in the orchestra today its main mode of playing is by plucking the strings rather than using a bow. In this respect, the harp is closer to that of keyboard instruments, and its texture of sound is remarkably similar. Harp strings are of varying length and a number are coloured to guide the harpist in selecting the correct note. In addition pedals are also available to vary the sound produced. The harp was very popular from the baroque to the romantic eras; a number of concertos were written for it, although none are particularly heavyweight. The chief role of the harp in the modern orchestra is to add atmospheric colour, as for example in the sweeping opening to Smetana's Ma Vlast. The harp is closely associated with Celtic countries, and has featured prominently as a national symbol.
