BIS Records has established itself as the premiere recording label of Scandinavia. It was founded in 1973 by Robert van Bahr with the aim of promoting Scandinavian repertoire and artists. With this aim they have recorded music by Sibelius (including a complete edition of the composer's work), Stenhammar, Alfven, Grieg and many lesser known composers from the region. Bis have also extended their range to include composers outside of the Nordic region and their period recordings of early music have been very successful. In addition Bis have contributed greatly to contemporary music on record with releases dedicated to the work of Eduard Tubin, Kalevi Aho and Arvo Part.
Artists who currently record for Bis include Masaaki Suzuki (who is recording the complete cantatas of J.S.Bach), Neeme Jarvi, clarinettist Martin Fröst, Emma Kirkby and Osma Vanska who has recoreded one of the finest contemporary sets of the Beethoven symphonies for the label. Bis also take special care in the recording process and are world-leaders in audio reproduction.
