ECM was set up by producer Manfred Eicher in 1969, principally to release jazz recordings. In 1984 ECM New Series was launched, initially focusing on the music of Estonian composer, Arvo Part but quickly incoporating such contemporary composers of the era as György Kurtag, Giya Kancheli, Heinz Holliger, Erkki-Sven Tuur and Valentin Silvestrov.
ECM New Series is well known throughout the record industry for the excellent quality of its performances and recordings as well as for its distinctive artwork. It features many of the finest classical musicians working today; stalwarts of the label include Gidon Kremer, Andreas Schiff, Thomas Zehetmair, Dennis Russell, the Hillliard Ensemble, Robert Levin and Kim Kashkashian. ECM New Series has also broadened its repertoire to include mainstream repertoire and highly acclaimed recordings of early music.
