Placido Domingo is a Spanish tenor. Born in Spain in 1941, Domingo's mother and father, who were prominent zarzuela stars, moved the family to Mexico to earn a living and it was in Mexico that Domingo made his debut as a singer. From Mexico he proceeded to perform in the United States in 1961, followed by two years with the Israel National Opera before returning to the USA. He made his Metropolitan debut in 1968.
Domingo then went onto be one of the most successful and the most diverse singers of his generation. No other tenor has as many roles as Domingo and he is as equally at home in the German repertoire as he is in the Latin. His greatest operatic role is Otello in Verdi's opera of the same name. In 1990 his career reached new heights with the success of The Three Tenors concert and album. Domingo has also conducted and he is closely involved in humanitarian work.
