Purcell: Ode for St. Cecilia's Day
Paul McCreesh, Charles Daniels, Christopher Purves, Charles Pott, Susan Hemington Jones, Julian Podger, Peter Harvey, Mark Le Brocq, Florian Deuter, Gabrieli Players, Gabrieli Consort
McCreesh really has a knack for creating superb recreations of historical performances and this one from Purcell is no exception. It encompasses a huge range of emotion and sound from the quiet, intimate sections to the full brass outbursts.
"The Archiv performance of the 1692 Ode for St Cecilia's Day is exceptionally receptive to the brilliance of the score. The trumpets are bold and brassy...and the ensemble as a whole moves effortlessly from discretion and intimacy to the imposing timbral homogeneity of McCreesh's most extrovert Venetian exploits."
